About Downtown
West Plains Downtown, briefly called “Courthouse Square Historic District,” was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. The district encompasses 46 contributing buildings in the central business district of West Plains. It was developed between about 1881 and 1950 and includes representative examples of Italianate, Queen Anne, Romanesque Revival, Late Gothic Revival, and Art Deco style architecture. Along with the unique square orientation as a “Lancaster square,” the addition of Arcades (originally) formed the four corners. There are three remaining arcades today.
The downtown area now has a larger footprint than it originally had, spanning further in each point of its square shape, and includes lots of new life for the community it sits within. From food and drink options to retail stores to lively and engaging events, West Plains Downtown is seeing new growth and life, and we’re excited to share that with you!
